Behind the Word:

Borrowed from French savant (“learned”), from Latin sapiēns (“wise”). First used in English in the early 1800s to describe scholars. Nowadays you’ll also hear it in “savant syndrome,” where someone has an extraordinary talent in one area despite other challenges.
